Mandarake Auctions off Misato Production Cel

Mandarake just auctioned off an apparently authentic production cel from Neon Genesis Evangelion, featuring Misato from the show’s opening animation. Bidding opened at 80,000 yen ($962), and ended at 326,100 yen ($3,923). That’s definitely too rich for my blood, even if it is a unique, tangible piece of the show’s history. What’s interesting about this auction is that (as I understand it) most, if not all, of the cels from Evangelion are in the private ownership of Gainax and its members, and there are only a small number of legitimate cels used in the production of the show that are floating around out there. There are of course reproductions, but this one claimed to come with a guarantee. Trusting it’s authenticity, I’m sure this one will make the buyer very happy. Me on the other hand, I’ve got plenty of cool stuff in my collection. If you’re interested in Evangelion cels, a user at Eva Geeks noticed an eBay auction for a supposedly legitimate cel from The End of Evangelion. I can’t vouch for its authenticity, but if you’re into collecting cels, or really just want to own a part of the show (literally), you should look into it.
