I’m sure everyone has had this experience at some point in their life, where you create something as a child or adolescent, and when you go back and look at it many years later, you ask yourself, “How can something that terrible exist?”. Ten to fifteen years ago, those sorts of things were relegated to folders and composition notebooks tucked away beneath beds or in the back of a closet somewhere. But now, with the internet, those sorts of things aren’t a private thing anymore, they exist for all sorts of ridicule. Sometimes its funny, and sometimes, as is the case with Hellstorm Evangelion, it’s hilarious.
Hellstorm Evangelion is a fan fic authored by Issei Mataloun, which has largely been lost to the sands of time. But its memory lives on, with an entry on TV Tropes, a textual MSTing by Elmer Studios in the late 90s, and an audio book by Heavens Feel Press which is absolutely hilarious. I don’t think it’s until you’ve taken the story and given it a dramatic read that you truly appreciate how incredibly terrible and, like many cult films, how absolutely hysterical and awesome it is with the right mindset. And would you believe there’s more? There’s also Issei Strikes Back and Hellstorm II. I highly recommend checking out the Hellstorm Evangelion audio book, it’s about an hour, and it’s pretty awesome.
